What are the myths about vasectomy?

It hurts

This is the most common myth about vasectomy. Everyone who has a vasectomy has local anaesthetic which numbs the area while the procedure takes place. The anaesthetic goes into the loose skin on the testicles not the scrotum and works within seconds. Men say that there is mild discomfort at worst, but not pain.

You’ll be less of a man

After a vasectomy there is nothing visually different. The operation scar is so small it does not usually need stitches. The fluid a man ejaculates is the same it just does not have any sperm in it. The man still produces sperm but as its pathway is blocked it just disperses naturally as it’s not needed. Ask any wife whose husband had a vasectomy if they are a man or not!!

The testicles swell up to twice their size

Some men may experience a little swelling after a vasectomy which is quite natural and usually subsides after a day or two. We recommend a bag of peas to reduce any swelling!!

It ruins your sex life

Not true, men tell us otherwise. Without the worry of an unintended pregnancy a couple’s sex life can be liberated and even better.

Won’t be able to play sport again

Having a vasectomy has no long term effect on paying any sport. Men are just advised not to play sport for up to 4 weeks after a vasectomy.
